The presented infrastructure project envisions the construction of a bypass road between Titova Street and Kremenca in the town of Postojna, Slovenia. Its primary aim is to alleviate traffic congestion in the town center, enhancing its residents’ urban mobility and quality of life.

In addition to easing traffic flow, the project ambitiously plans to develop new residential buildings, business spaces, shops, and a swimming pool alongside the new traffic link.

Project name: Construction of the Western Connection Road between the Roundabout at Log on Titova Road and Kremenca

Location: Postojna, Slovenia

Design team: BOSON, a multidisciplinary consultancy focusing on sustainable engineering, construction, and comprehensive project management.

The goal: The objective is to connect two areas of Postojna with the aim of alleviating traffic congestion in the town center. Additionally, the new road will facilitate further development of the area, including the construction of residential buildings, office spaces, shops, and a swimming pool.

Investor: Municipality Postojna

Software solution used: PLATEIA, AUTOSIGN, AUTOPATH, BricsCAD

Project Details and Innovations

The bypass road, spanning approximately 850 meters, is mostly built on an embankment. To avoid an overly large embankment, one side of the road features a supporting wall. This structural choice not only solves engineering challenges but also minimizes the project’s environmental footprint.

One of the project’s key components includes the reconstruction of an existing roundabout and the construction of two new ones. Additionally, the project involves a precise design process to accommodate height and positional adjustments for all connections, accesses, and entrances to residential and commercial properties. Alongside the new road, a dual-direction bike lane with an adjacent sidewalk is being constructed, which promotes sustainable urban mobility.

The project relied on PLATEIA software for all its design needs. This tool was used to carefully plan every detail of the road’s intersections, roundabouts, and residential access roads in the area. This software helped them achieve designs that not only looked good but also functioned effectively. By using PLATEIA, Jerneja could easily make adjustments and see how different design choices would work in real life. She particularly appreciated that the program is localized, which means it alerts her if a proposed solution does not align with local standards.

Integrating the new road into the existing landscape and planning the roundabouts presented significant challenges. Acquiring land led to size and design constraints, resulting in smaller-than-usual roundabouts and approaches designed at smaller angles. Despite these obstacles, the project team found innovative solutions to ensure the road’s functionality and safety.

Jerneja Čehovin is a young and exceptionally skilled civil engineer at Boson, a Slovenian company known for its innovative approach to infrastructure projects. Her work primarily focuses on designing new roads, road reconstructions, and bicycle paths. During her university studies, she first came into contact with CGS Labs Civil Solutions. Now, as a professional associate at Boson, she has skillfully applied her knowledge and expertise to various significant projects.

Technology and Software Utilization

A crucial part of the project’s success was the use of specialized software tools. In addition to using the PLATEIA software, they also used AUTOPATH and AUTOSIGN programs for the project. The AUTOPATH software for vehicle swept path analysis and simulation, praised by project members for its user-friendly and localized interface and the library of vehicles compliant with Slovenian standards, played a significant role. It enabled the team to quickly and easily conduct swept path analysis and check the transportability of vehicles, such as trucks and garbage trucks, ensuring all designed access roads were practical and safe.

Additionally, the AUTOSIGN software, with its extensive library of traffic signs, allowed for the efficient creation of the traffic management plan. This tool’s capabilities ensured that the project’s signage was up to standards, contributing to the overall safety and effectiveness of the new infrastructure.

“The comprehensive library of Slovenian traffic signs enables us to design traffic arrangements quickly and effectively. This resource ensures our plans comply with local standards, streamlining the creation process while enhancing safety and efficiency.”

Environmental and Community Considerations

In line with project documentation requirements, the team also focused on environmental aspects, such as the proper drainage of storm and backwater. Documentation for the road lighting setup was meticulously prepared, ensuring the new infrastructure’s sustainability and minimal impact on the surrounding environment.

Conclusion

The bypass road project between Titova Street and Kremenca represents a significant step forward in addressing urban traffic congestion and improving the living conditions in the town center. By combining innovative engineering solutions, advanced software tools, and a focus on sustainable development, the project sets a benchmark for future urban infrastructure endeavors.

Furthermore, the project team has expressed immense satisfaction with the technical support received. The responsiveness, speed, and readiness to assist at all times were highly appreciated, significantly contributing to the project’s smooth progression. This level of support underscores our dedication to not just meet but exceed project expectations, ensuring every aspect of the infrastructure development is executed flawlessly.
