Designing the Interchange Junction of the B180 Reschenstraße and L18 Kaunertalstraße in Austria
The office of the Tyrolean state government, department of state roads and cycle paths (Abteilung Landesstraßen und Radwege), commissioned the design of the interchange junction of the B 180 Reschenstraße with the L 18 Kaunertalstraße. The design was carried out according to the plans of Ingenieurbüros für Verkehrs- und Infrastrukturplanung (Dipl.-Ing. Dr. techn. Christian HAMERLE) und der ASCHABER ZT GmbH (Dipl.-Ing. Dr.techn. Matthias ASCHABER) from August 2021 to July 2024.
In advance, the engineering company Hamerle prepared both the study and the submission and execution planning up to the road marking and traffic sign plan for the construction of the underpass and the junction. This included the drainage planning and the relocation of the supply lines in the intersection area. In addition, the ramp roadways and the junction B 180 Reschenstraße / L18 Kaunertalstraße / Prutzer Innbrücke were redesigned as a roundabout. The entire planning process, from the study to the implementation and detailed planning, was carried out with the help of the road design software Plateia.
The particular challenge of this project was the limited space and the proximity of the Inn (river), as neither buildings could be demolished nor the drainage cross-section of the Inn (river) reduced. In addition, the heritage-protected Innbrücke bridge to Entbruck had to remain in place.
The study that was carried out showed that a mixed junction (where 2 different road types meet) with an interchange connection of the subordinate roads to the B 180 Reschenstraße and thus the underpass of the B 180 Reschenstraße is the best solution from a traffic and economic point of view. In addition, the noise and pollution for residents was significantly reduced and the district of Entbruck was reconnected to the center of the municipality of Prutz.
The B 180 Reschenstraße connects Austria and Italy and is an important route for holiday traffic, with traffic volumes of more than 15,000 vehicles per 24 hours on peak days.
The construction project in question, with costs of approx. 35 million euros, includes the construction of a mixed junction on the B 180 Reschenstraße at km 5.23, whereby the B 180 Reschenstraße will be designed as an interchange connection. The construction of an underpass required the reconstruction of Reschenstraße between km 4.7 and km 5.62, resulting in a construction lot length of approx. 930 m. In addition to the underpass, ramp lanes (parallel ramps) are required. The remaining at-grade junction will be solved in the form of a roundabout with a diameter of 35 m.
At the beginning of the construction site, between the Inn River and the B 180 Reschenstraße, a 650-square-meter seepage reservoir was built to dispose of road runoff from the construction site in accordance with the applicable guidelines and regulations.
