Project name: Designing a roundabout in the urban center of Novigrad

Location: Novigrad, Croatia

Design team: Corridor Project, led by civil engineer Dino Stanić

The goal: To create a safe, space-efficient roundabout that ensures smooth circulation for all vehicle types, while respecting urban spatial constraints and complying with Croatian regulations.

Design objects: Roundabout geometry, swept path analysis for multiple vehicle types, road signage and pavement markings (traffic equipment).

Software solution used: Plateia, Autopath, and Autosign by CGS LABS

Overcoming urban design challenges with a complete workflow

In the coastal town of Novigrad, Croatia, the challenge was clear: to design a space-efficient and safe roundabout in a dense urban environment, where seasonal traffic peaks bring a wide range of vehicle types — from local cars to tourist buses and heavy-duty delivery trucks.

The project was carried out by civil engineer Dino Stanić, who specializes in transport infrastructure design. His task was to create a solution that respected the site’s spatial constraints while ensuring smooth traffic flow and full compliance with Croatian road design regulations.

Integrated solutions for every stage of the design process

To successfully deliver the project, Dino Stanić relied on a fully integrated suite of CGS LABS software solutions, which enabled him to handle every step of the design process — from geometry layout to swept path analysis and road signage planning — all within a single, connected environment.

  1. Geometric design with Plateia

The design process began with Plateia, CGS LABS’ road and infrastructure design software. One of Plateia’s key advantages is the flexible axis definition for roundabout geometry, offering different approaches depending on the design intent — whether using the centerline, lane edge, or inner edge as the reference. In Novigrad’s case, Stanić chose the outer lane edge, which proved to be the optimal solution for fitting the roundabout into the constrained space while maintaining proper road functionality and safety.

“Plateia makes it easy to quickly visualize your layout and immediately see whether your design stays within property lines or conflicts with adjacent parcels,” explains Dino Stanić. “This flexibility and speed at the conceptual stage helped me make informed decisions early in the process.”

  1. Ensuring maneuverability with Autopath

Considering the mixed nature of Novigrad’s traffic, Dino Stanić performed detailed swept path analysis using Autopath, also developed by CGS LABS. With access to a wide range of vehicle libraries — including Croatian standards, international truck manufacturers, emergency vehicles such as fire trucks and ambulances, as well as municipal service vehicles like waste collection trucks — he was able to accurately simulate turning movements and confirm that the roundabout could safely accommodate all expected vehicle types.

  1. Traffic signage design with Autosign

The final and essential step was to equip the roundabout with all required traffic signs and road markings, ensuring full compliance with Croatian traffic regulations. This was achieved using Autosign, CGS LABS’ solution for road signage design and planning.

Throughout the process, Dino benefited from working with a fully 3D model, which provided clear spatial understanding at every design stage. Combined with the ability to generate detailed design reports and project documentation, the integrated CGS LABS solutions supported efficient project development from concept to approval.

“Having the ability to plan road geometry, verify maneuverability, and design road signage — all within the same ecosystem — gave us complete control over the project and saved significant time,” adds Stanić.

The power of an integrated solution

By combining Plateia, Autopath, and Autosign, Stanić was able to:

  • Manage the entire workflow from concept to final documentation.
  • Ensure full compliance with national standards and regulations.
  • Work efficiently with quick iterations and clear visual feedback.

Reduce risks and avoid errors by using interoperable tools.

Strong local support through global partnership

A key factor in the successful implementation of CGS LABS solutions is the company’s global partner network, which ensures that users worldwide have access to expert support and local know-how. In Croatia, CGS LABS has been represented for over 20 years by StudioARS, whose technical team provides first-class support and training for users.

“Reliable software is important — but reliable support is crucial. The assistance we receive from the local partner ensures we can fully leverage the capabilities of the tools, even when dealing with complex design challenges,” says Stanić.

Conclusion

The roundabout project in Novigrad showcases how an integrated software approach, backed by strong local support, can help engineers successfully navigate complex urban design challenges. Thanks to the combined power of Plateia, Autopath, and Autosign, along with the expertise of Dino Stanić and the support of StudioARS, the solution delivered balances functionality, safety, and spatial constraints — fully aligned with regulatory requirements and real-world needs.
